As the sketches exhibited indicate, Søren Engsted had originally conceived this as a trained animal trick with a patient dog and comic figures formed from balloons but decided—because it was difficult to ensure it would work with a live animal—he would instead try out his talents as an animal tamer on balloon horses. To the delight of viewers, an inflated horse turns out to be rather self-willed as well, providing plenty of comedy and excitement for the performance.
The influence of chance, failure and the use of everyday objects are central elements of Søren Engsted’s oeuvre and part of his method for making art. For example, the comical balloons conceived for the animal training act now float about the room, stripped of their original function. They too became part of the sculpture that was created by filling a balloon with construction foam and revealing its misshapen, pale yellow inner life, to which a floating balloon is attached to allude to its previous form.
